Unique Antique Items and Two Men Detained in GDBOP Special Operation in Lovech
Unique antique items and two men were detained during a special operation by the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP), conducted on July 2, 2026, in the Lovech region.
During the investigation, evidence was gathered regarding the criminal activity of a group of individuals involved in the searching, possession, and trafficking of movable cultural property. Consequently, under conditions of urgency, two men were arrested during an attempted commercial transaction.
Personal searches revealed 5 extremely rare gold antique coins and 3 silver tetradrachms of high monetary and archaeological value on one individual, and €5,100 on the other. Subsequent searches of their residences yielded a total of 112 items bearing the characteristics of cultural values, 4 metal detectors, and a stone artifact featuring a bird's body and an anthropogenic head.
According to preliminary data and expert opinions, the stone statuette is an extremely rare archaeological specimen dating back over 5,000 years. Its likely origin is an African country, though it was discovered on Bulgarian territory, and its value exceeds €100,000. The discovered gold coins are valued by auction houses at over €20,000.
Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated under the supervision of the District Prosecutor's Office - Lovech. The investigation is ongoing.
