An organised crime group involved in the international trafficking of narcotics through the country was dismantled in a special GDCOC operation, with the assistance of the Customs Agency. The action took place on 2–3 June 2026 at the Ruse – Danube Bridge border checkpoint.
Six people aged between 35 and 63 were arrested, one of them a Honduran national permanently residing in the Kingdom of Spain.
They were found to be linked to the smuggling of 400 kilograms of high-THC marijuana, valued at 4,089,833.99 euros (8,000,000 leva).
The drugs were concealed in a hidden compartment of a freight vehicle stopped for customs inspection on entry from Romania. Officers seized 80 boxes, each holding five vacuum-sealed bags of dried plant material.
All detainees were held for up to 72 hours. The Ruse District Prosecutor’s Office brought charges under Articles 242, 354a and 321 of the Criminal Code.
